Melon de Bourgogne – The underrated white wine variety from the Loire Valley
Melon de Bourgogne is a traditional white wine variety that is mainly grown in the French Loire region of Muscadet. The grape variety originally comes from Burgundy, but was replaced there by other grape varieties in the 18th century and found its new home on the Atlantic coast of the Loire.
Melon de Bourgogne is particularly known for its Muscadet wines, which are appreciated for their dry, fresh and mineral character. These wines are often matured “sur lie“, i.e. they mature on the fine lees, which gives them a slight creaminess and complexity.
Thanks to its high acidity, fine citrus notes and salty minerality, Melon de Bourgogne is the perfect accompaniment to fish, seafood and oysters – in France it is traditionally served with fresh oysters straight from Brittany.
