Douro Valley

Steep slate slopes, old vines & the heart of port wine

One of the most spectacular wine landscapes in Europe

The Douro Valley in north-eastern Portugal is not only one of the oldest legally protected wine-growing regions in the world, but also one of the most impressive: steep slate slopes terraced by dry stone walls nestle along the winding course of the Douro River, which shapes the image of this unique cultural landscape. The warm, dry continental climate and the barren soils produce concentrated, powerful and long-lasting wines – both white and red, dry and sweet.

While the Douro Valley was long known exclusively for its famous port wine, the region has undergone a rapid transformation in recent decades: Today, some of Portugal’s most expressive dry wines are also produced here – complex, full of character and with impressive depth.

History & wine culture in the Douro Valley

The Romans cultivated vines in the Douro valley as early as the 3rd century BC. However, the region’s greatest fame came from port wine, which flourished under English influence from the 17th century onwards. In 1756, under the regency of Marquês de Pombal, the Douro Valley was demarcated as the first controlled wine-growing region in the world – a milestone in the history of wine law.

Today, the region is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a prime example of the harmonious interplay between nature, craftsmanship and culture. The famous quintas – wineries, some of which have been run for generations – characterize the image of the region, as does the centuries-old technique of slate terraces. Today, many of these estates open their doors to visitors and offer impressive insights into the artisanal production of port and still wines.

Grape varieties & stylistics

The Douro Valley is characterized by an impressive variety of indigenous grape varieties – many of which are hardly known outside Portugal. The most important ones:

  • Touriga Nacional: flagship of the region, intensely fragrant, structured and long-lasting

  • Touriga Franca: Soft, floral partner in cuvées

  • Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo): Spice, power, red fruit

  • Tinta Barroca & Tinto Cão: depth, density, ageing potential

  • Rabigato, Viosinho, Codega do Larinho (white wine): Freshness, minerality, herbaceousness

In terms of wine style, the Douro Valley offers far more than just port:

  • Dry red wines: powerful, spicy, often matured in wood

  • Dry white wines: mineral, elegant, with herbal and citrus notes

  • Rosé wines: increasingly modern, fruity and fresh

  • Port wines: from Ruby to Tawny to Vintage – legendary and complex

Douro cuisine: rustic, hearty & full of soul

The cuisine of the Douro Valley is simple, hearty and earthy – perfectly matched to the structure of the local wines. Typical are:

  • Posta à Mirandesa: Grilled beef with garlic

  • Cabrito assado: Goat roast braised in the oven

  • Tripas à moda do Porto: Hearty tripe stew

  • Bacalhau com natas: Cod with creamy potato gratin

  • Arroz de pato: Duck rice from the oven

As a sweet accompaniment to tawny or vintage port wines:

  • Pasteis de Nata, Bolo de Mel (honey cake) or dried figs & almonds.

Wine & food: An ideal combination

The combination of wine and food in the Douro Valley does not follow fashion, but centuries of experience. A richly structured Touriga Nacional effortlessly accompanies braised beef, while a fresh white wine from Rabigato goes perfectly with fish from the river or regional goat’s cheese. Matured tinto cuvées with depth and backbone go well with hearty stews with beans, meat and cabbage.

And the finale? A glass of mature Tawny Port with pastéis de nata or blue cheese, of course – a classic with goosebumps guaranteed.
